Owain Browne

teaching

Owain is an experienced teacher in both classroom and individual or small-group settings. Before he began his singing training in Glasgow he completed a PGCE and qualified as a teacher, working as Head of Music in Stowupland High School in Suffolk.

As a singing teacher Owain has experience teaching at conservatoire level having worked as a lecturer for Leeds College of music where as well as giving individual lessons he coached small ensembles and taught a class on performance in context.

His training and career have also provided him with the invaluable experience of being able to watch great singers and pedagogues teaching and singing close up both on stage, in rehearsal and in masterclasses as both observer and active participant.

On a private basis he offers individual tuition and repertoire coaching including language coaching in French, German and Italian.

Owain also has experience working for opera companies in an educational setting. He appeared in Heart 2 Get for Vlaamse Opera which was designed as a show for a teenage audience with surtitles developed by students in local schools.

He has also appeared a number of times with Jackdaws OperaPLUS – a programme that brings productions of operas into schools in Somerset and Wiltshire. As well as performing, the soloists collectively lead workshops in the participating schools which serve as an introduction to opera and opera singing. The children themselves are heavily involved in the performances as chorus members and the level of engagement they show is ceaselessly inspiring.

Owain is passionate about the transformative power of music education and of opera within that context as both a right for all children and as vital for the continued existence of the industry.
